What is liposuction?
Liposuction is a widely known cosmetic surgery operation to remove excess body fat. It is also referred to as lipoplasty, lipo, or body contouring. People undergo liposuction to enhance their body’s structure or contours. They want to get rid of excess fat in places like the hips, thighs, buttocks, arms, abdomen, neck, and back.
Liposuction, is considered a generally well-tolerated procedure for suitable, healthy patients; but that does not mean it doesn’t have risks. All surgery has risks.
Liposculpture is one of the latest and most advanced body shaping procedures, designed to remove fat and sculpt the body. The result? An enhanced body contour, definition and physique.
A consultation is important determine if you are suitable for the procedure or not. Obvious contraindications like health conditions aside, there are important considerations that need to be discussed.
The first stage of the liposuction process involves an in-depth consultation with Dr. Ali Izadpanah. He will assess each client’s specific needs and determine the best treatment plan customized to their unique requirements.
Dr. Ali Izadpanah will also use the opportunity to determine if the client might benefit from a combined procedure, such as liposuction with a mommy makeover. Liposuction procedures can target the abdomen, thighs, upper arms and back, chin, and neck.
The “Ideal” Candidate for Liposuction
The ideal candidate for liposuction is healthy and near their goal weight. However, it’s essential to understand that liposuction isn’t intended for weight loss.
If you are still significantly overweight, your surgeon will probably recommend losing weight first. Most patients who undergo liposuction are within 10 to 15 pounds of their goal weight.
Also, you should have reasonably good skin elasticity for the best liposuction results. If you have loose skin in the area you want to be treated, you may develop loose skin after the procedure.
Dr. Ali Izadpanah will provide detailed instructions a few days before your procedure. Most importantly, you will need a friend or family member to drive you home from the surgical site.
You also will need someone to help you for the first day or two after surgery. After that, you will be sore, and it’s important to rest and take it easy.
You may need to stop taking certain medications, such as blood thinners. Your doctor may do blood work to determine if you can be given anesthesia safely.
Last, you should not eat or drink for about 12 hours before the procedure.
The procedure is done as an outpatient, usually under general anesthesia.
The liposuction procedure begins with Dr. Ali Izadpanah injecting tumescent fluid into the treatment area(s).
A fluid mixture of saline, local anesthetic, and epinephrine is infused into the fat. This is called tumescent fluid and it controls blood loss and fluid absorption, making the procedure very safe and well controlled. It distends the subcutaneous space facilitating safe passes of the liposuction cannula.
Ultrasonic liposuction is used in areas where the fat can be denser and more fibrous such as the male chest or upper back. In these areas, the cannula does not pass easily because of tissue resistance. Therefore a preliminary operative stage involves liquefying the fat with heat (ultrasound), so that the liposuction cannula can then pass with little resistance and extract the fatty tissue efficiently.
Incisions are closed with sutures, and patients are placed in snug compression garment.
Recovery and Downtime
Recovery times do vary, but ideally, allow 2 weeks off of normal duties if you can. That is because the incisions are relatively small and the entire surgery is minimally invasive. Generally, patients can resume most of their normal daily activities four weeks after undergoing liposuction.
And ASK your Surgeon how long to wait before resuming certain activities, particularly lifting, exercise or driving.
You may be very tender and quite sore, even bruised, after Liposuction. However, depending on your health, your natural recovery ability and what you had done – you may be able to go back to some work duties in as little as a week or two following your procedure.
Risk of complications is minimized as long as the surgeon has performed the procedure in a precise manner, and the patient follows instructions during the recovery phase.
Additional Benefits of Liposuction

Liposuction Results Will Get Better With Time
You will see an improvement after liposuction, but won’t realize your optimal benefits until the swelling and bruising subside. After one to three months, your body will start settling into its enhanced outline, with continual progress for up to one year. Be patient. Your body needs time to heal and deliver those outstanding results.
